View all 4 comments.

Another masterful work from one of France's leading authors, Philippe Besson's marvelous story of parallel relationships at a time when the world has gone mad.

The hero, Vincent de l'Etoile, is 16 years old in , living the insulated life of Parisian aristocracy. He is too young to be conscripted into the war ravaging Europe, which has stripped the city of most of its young male population. The family's housekeeper has a son, Arthur, 21 and home on a one-week leave. Arthur and Vinc Another masterful work from one of France's leading authors, Philippe Besson's marvelous story of parallel relationships at a time when the world has gone mad.

Arthur and Vincent have a blazing idyllic romance during this hiatus, pledging themselves heart, soul and body to one another. At the same time, Vincent has begun an intense friendship with none other than Marcel Proust, all of 45, celebrated, famous, yet oddly drawn to the effete, nearly withdrawn Vincent.

The novel alternates chapters between these two remarkable relationships, one deeply intellectual, the other erotic and spiritual. Both are deeply shaped by the war, and, of course, Vincent's position of extreme privilege. He has no chance of being drafted, no wish to volunteer when he's of age, and no need to concern himself with the horrors taking place within a day's distance from Paris. The first book of the novel is the unfolding of the two relationships, with Proust and with Arthur.

Besson structures these as recalled conversations, a very Proustian construct. The next section become epistolary, as both men are removed from Paris, and each relationship is replaced by letters. There's perhaps too much time given over to descriptions of the luscious, blooming aristocrat.

How many times do we need to be reminded of his green eyes and thick black hair? Or that he is 16, which carries a creepy undertone for the modern reader. I mean, I knew I was gay when I was 16, but I certainly was not yet undertaking bold romantic liaisons in my parents' home. Despite the lush setting, and the war in the background, there are times when it's all more than a bit twee.

The sexual encounters are quite graphic, near soft-core porn, but still cast in the flattering pink light of a romance novel. The third section switches tone yet again; I can tell you no further. But the story grabs hold of your heart, as both relationships assume their ultimate shape.

The ending, while again a bit over-wrought, is very affecting. One more entry in Important Gay Fiction. Shelves: french-edition , c20th , france , gaylit-lgbtiq. It has taken me ages and ages to read this book because it was a handbag book: I read it in coffee shops, in waiting rooms and on trains. I read it that way because I read the French edition, and I wanted to stop myself from consulting the dictionary every time I was stuck for a word. And even though this means I mainly read it at plot level and probably missed some of its nuances, I still loved reading it because it is a beautiful book.

Do It has taken me ages and ages to read this book because it was a handbag book: I read it in coffee shops, in waiting rooms and on trains. Doomed because the story is set during WW1 when Vincent is 16, and his first love, Arthur, is destined for the carnage on the battlefront.
